Our CNC Machining Tolerance Standard

We offer CNC milling and turning services that can meet tolerances of +0.005” for metals and +0.010” for plastics and composites. However, we can provide even tighter tolerances as required.

Our specialized CNC milling machines can produce parts that are up to 80” x 48” x 24” in size, while our lathes can turn parts up to 60” in length and 32” in diameter. We can also accommodate standard thread sizes and tapped holes, and can machine custom threads as well.  With our efficient post-processing and finishing unit under the same roof, we provide streamlined solutions that will help you make the perfect part from start to finish.

What is CNC Machining?

CNC machining is a subtractive manufacturing process. It typically involves computer control and machine tools to remove layers of material from a blank or workpiece, thereby machining it into parts with custom designs or desired shapes.

What is the precision your CNC machining equipment can achieve?

FirstMold’s CNC machining tolerance standards generally follow ISO-2768-M. The precision of CNC turning service is usually slightly higher than that of CNC milling service. The highest tolerance we can stably guarantee is ±0.127mm (±0.005″), and the minimum tolerance for precision parts is ±0.0254mm (±0.001″).

Can you purchase higher precision equipment based on our accuracy requirements?

The accuracy provided by FirstMold’s existing equipment can already meet the machining needs of the vast majority of parts. Of course, due to the need for business expansion, we are also continuously updating to higher precision equipment.

What types of CNC equipment do you have?

We have five-axis machining centers, high-speed CNC machines, mill-turn centers, lathes, milling machines, Optic EDM, double-head EDM, grinding machines, and more.

What is the typical manufacturing lead time for CNC machining?

This depends on the size and precision requirements of the parts in the project. For rapid prototypes, our machines can complete a workpiece in 1-7 hours. Since the order quantity for rapid prototypes is generally not too large, we can complete the project within 3-7 days. For large-scale production parts, it may take a longer time.

What are the differences between your high-precision CNC machining services and your standard CNC machining services?
  • Tolerance Levels: High-precision CNC machining offers tighter tolerance levels, typically up to ±0.0254mm (±0.001″), compared to the standard ±0.127mm (±0.005″) in our regular CNC machining services.

  • Equipment: High-precision CNC machining utilizes advanced equipment, such as five-axis machining centers and high-speed CNC machines, which are capable of achieving higher accuracy and more complex geometries.

  • Inspection and Quality Control: High-precision services involve more rigorous inspection and quality control processes, including the use of advanced measurement tools and techniques to ensure the parts meet exact specifications.

  • Materials: Certain high-precision machining projects may require specialized materials that demand specific handling and machining techniques, which are supported by our high-precision services.

If my order is extremely urgent, is there a risk of delays due to scheduling?

Given our significant influence in the industry, we indeed have a substantial number of orders. Normally, all orders are processed in the order they are received.

However, if your order is extremely urgent, please make sure to communicate with our sales representative. We will reasonably adjust the processing schedule to ensure your order can be completed on time.

Can you produce small-sized parts in bulk?

Yes, our turning services and turn-mill compound technology are specifically designed for the production of small parts in bulk, ensuring high precision in mass production.

What inspection equipment and methods do you use to verify machining accuracy?
  • Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM): To measure the precise dimensions and geometries of parts.
  • Optical Comparators: For visual inspection and comparison of parts against design specifications.
  • Laser Scanners: To capture detailed surface measurements and ensure accurate dimensions.

We do not have the equipment for ultrasonic machining or laser machining in-house. However, if you trust us, we can refer you to reliable machining vendors who specialize in these processes.

Our parts require deep hole drilling and fine slot machining. How do you ensure the accuracy of these features?
  • Specialized Equipment: We use specialized drilling and slotting machines designed for high precision in deep holes and fine features.

  • Precision Tooling: We utilize high-quality, precision cutting tools such as carbide drills and end mills that are specifically designed for deep hole and fine slot machining.

we ensure the durability and stability of parts by performing appropriate heat treatments such as annealing, quenching, and tempering. These processes enhance the mechanical properties and wear resistance of the parts, making them more durable and stable for long-term use.

High polish with exemplary amount of detail and reflectiveness in the surface of the part. Surface is bright and shiny with a look and feel that is premium.

Bead Blasting

Bead blasting delivers a satin surface finish or uniform matte finish on parts, removing all tool marks. Bead blasting can also impart textures on your part, and prepare the surface for further finish.

Powder coating

Powder coating delivers strong fatigue and wear resistance, and is compatible with virtually every metal material. It can be used as an alternative to anodizing finishes.


Anodizing is used to increase corrosion-resistance, scratch-resistance and durability in mechanical parts. It is versatile and can be applied directly to a part, or used after bead blasting, brushing or bright dipping to achieve matte or glossy finishes as required. Firstmold offers Chemical film, type I, type II and type III anodizing sheet metal parts. Anodizing is also an ideal surface treatment for painting and priming.


Brushing is an aesthetic surface finish used to draw traces and give a brushed feel on the surface of the material, usually metals. It is used on ABS, Aluminum, Stainless Steel and Brass
