Our Turning & Mill-Turn Capabilities
Turning services are one type of CNC machining services. We use traditional turning, CNC turning, and turn-mill technology to machine shafts, pins, sleeves, and other rotational parts. We can handle orders from 1 to over 100,000 pieces.
Turning projects with small batches below 1,000 pieces are mainly for product R&D prototyping, prototype validation, non-standard mold/die-casting mold parts, equipment maintenance spare parts, customized precision shafts, sleeves and pins, automotive/medical sample parts, and other trial production, customization and supporting projects.
Turning projects with large batches of 1,000 pieces and above are mainly for standardized mass production and large-scale supporting industrial orders, such as pins, shafts and sleeves for die-casting applications, electronic connectors, motor shafts, precision sensor components, automotive standard fasteners, and batch precision metal rotational parts.

FAQ for Turning Services
I’m new to this industry. What is turning?
Turning is one of the most basic machining methods. In simple terms, a round bar is clamped in a machine and spun at high speed, while a cutting tool moves along it to remove excess material—leaving you with the desired rotational shape (like a shaft, pin, or sleeve). What types of parts can your traditional turning service produce?
First Mold keeps traditional turning available mainly for non-standard mold parts and equipment maintenance spares, such as sleeves, ejector pins, ejector sleeves, and guide pillars. We no longer use traditional turning for prototyping, because it simply can’t match the speed and efficiency of CNC turning.
What complex-shaped parts can you make with CNC turning?
CNC turning sits between traditional turning and turn-mill combined machining. With our CNC turning centers, First Mold can produce complex rotational parts that feature multiple steps, internal and external threads, tapers, curved profiles, seal grooves, and tight-fit tolerances.
What materials do you machine with CNC turning?
We mainly handle metals, including:
- Steels: carbon steel, alloy steel, tool steel, stainless steel (304, 316, etc.)
- Aluminum: 6061, 7075, and others
- Copper alloys: brass, copper
- Titanium alloys and high-temperature alloys
CNC turning can also machine plastics like POM (acetal), PEEK, and nylon, but in practice these are very rarely used at our facility (almost none).
Do you offer surface finishing for turned parts?
Yes, First Mold provides over 20 surface finishing options. Processes like screen printing, laser engraving, and simple sandblasting are done in-house. For anodizing, zinc plating, nickel plating, chrome plating, spray painting, and similar finishes, we work with a partner we’ve trusted for over 12 years.
Do you offer Swiss turning?
We currently don’t have Swiss-type automatic lathes. That said, our CNC turning and turn-mill combined capabilities cover the needs of most common small precision parts, with localized tolerances held to ±0.005 mm. You’re welcome to send us your drawings—we’ll evaluate whether we can meet your requirements with our existing high-precision equipment, or offer you the most suitable advice.
